Renault has announced that many of its new cars will offer CarPlay compatibility from April. The announcement is a little vague – including that ‘etc’ in the quote above – but appears to indicate that CarPlay support will not be available in either the Clio or Captur … R-LINK 2, available in Megane, Scenic, Talisman, etc will be compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Our clients will benefit of the widest combination ever: onboard R-LINK apps and Google/Apple apps....

The report doesn’t mention the possibility of the camera being used as a home surveillance solution, but the rumor is that the Siri speaker would incorporate HomeKit as well. Apple’s home automation framework currently lacks support for home security cameras, but the category has been growing in popularity lately and Apple’s privacy focus would make it a trustworthy handler of this data for potential customers. If a Siri camera is announced and a video camera is included, however, the report’s explanation that it would be used to identify users and set preferences would be an interesting solution to a real problem....

Bloomberg today reports that Apple will be giving most of its global employees an extra bonus as the company plans on repatriating almost $250B of its overseas cash after new US tax laws were passed. According to unnamed sources, Apple made the announcement today to employees that it would issue $2,500 worth of restricted stock units (RSU’s) following the new tax laws. This news comes as Apple also made major announcements about plans to invest $350B in the US economy over the next five years, create 20,000+ jobs, build a new campus, and more....

Variety reports that actor Seth Rogen has been cast to play Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic from Sony: We learned earlier this month that Christian Bale, who starred in the recent Batman trilogy, will portray Steve Jobs in the Aaron Sorkin directed film. Sorkin later confirmed the report adding that Christian Bale didn’t have to audition for the role in the film. While the Sony-backed film is being written by Aaron Sorkin, Danny Boyle will be directing the upcoming biopic....

Stanford University said that 11,000 iPhone owners signed up for a heart health study using Apple’s newly-announced ResearchKit in the first 24 hours–completely unprecedented numbers. Stanford is one of five academic centers that have developed apps that use the iPhone’s built-in accelerometers, gyroscopes and GPS to provide data which assists in medical research. There are, say researchers, both pros & cons to recruiting study participants through ResearchKit … “To get 10,000 people enrolled in a medical study normally, it would take a year and 50 medical centers around the country,” said Alan Yeung, medical director of Stanford Cardiovascular Health, speaking to Bloomberg....

I’ll admit this is a hard report to take at face value. Reuters is reporting that Apple has plans to release a $99 iPhone in a variety of colors later this year. While we’ve heard the plastic/color option on many occasions from analysts, leakers, and reports, it would seem impossible for Apple to reach the $99 price point without subsidizing the phone somehow. All but the very cheapest Android phones even cost above $100....

The production company of famous director Ridley Scott has signed a first look deal with Apple TV+, reports Variety.
