Former Apple Retail Chief Ron Johnson is out at JCPenney after his radical retail redesign failed to ignite sales in the same manner in which Apple Stores had grown accustomed. Ron Johnson left Apple in 2011 for the JCP job after a decade at Apple. He helped design the original Apple Store concept after being lured away from Target by Apple CEO Steve Jobs. He pioneered concepts like the Genius Bar which was unheard of at the time but still a growing trend in the industry....

According to a report from CNET, Twitter might be preparing to launch a new standalone iOS music app as early as the end of this month. The report cites “a person familiar with the matter” and claimed Twitter would use technology it acquired through its purchase of music discovery service We Are Hunted to provide a music service dubbed “Twitter Music.” CNET says the service will provide customized content suggestions based on who users follow on Twitter....

The battle for exclusive streaming rights to music content is heating up between services like Apple Music and Tidal. Universal Music Group, however, has apparently had it with single-platform exclusive streaming deals and will no longer agree to them, according to Billboard. Reportedly, Universal’s chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge told the executives of the company’s labels that Universal would no longer agree to single-platform, global streaming exclusives following the release of Frank Ocean’s “Blond” on Apple Music....

Apple seems to have a good — a really good — chance to seize enterprise sales from RIM’s BlackBerry devices. Apple boss Steve Jobs alluded to this earlier this week, when he said, “We’ve now passed RIM (Research in Motion) and I don’t see them catching up with us in the foreseeable future.” Now it seems industry wisdom is moving to the Jobsin position. “We agree with his (Jobs) views,” analyst Michael Walkley of Canacord Genuity told the National Post daily....

California now allows the commercial use of light autonomous delivery vehicles, paving the way for robot pizza deliveries and more. The use of autonomous vehicles in California is not new with this latest change an extension to the regulations that were already in place. The newly adopted rules were first proposed by the California DMV in April. Autonomous vehicles come in two main varieties at the moment. The team behind Next Gen Stats (NGS) created the “Passing Score” statistic to assess whether a quarterback made the optimal decision after the play. The NFL said dozens of quarterback evaluation metrics exist but they all miss out on isolating the specific variables a quarterback must evaluate before a passing play. Josh Helmrich, NFL Director of strategy and business development, told ZDNet that AWS and the NFL worked together to combine 7 different machine learning models and several play variables to create the Next Gen Stats Passing Score....

I love that some people have too much time on their hands. Thanks to Slack developer Felix Rieseberg, you can now run Mac OS 8 on a 1991 Macintosh Quadra 900 without any messing about with separate emulators and OS installs. The whole thing runs on your Mac as a single, standalone Javascript app… You can also run it on a Windows or Linux machine. The underlying emulator is Basilisk II, a 68k Macintosh emulator by Christian Bauer et al, modified and compiled with Emscripten by James Friend....
