One of the great things about the Mac Pro, and the primary reason why I’ve been anticipating it so much, is its ability to accommodate PCIe expansion. According to a new report from Reuters, a U.S. federal judge has issued a preliminary ruling this evening that Qualcomm must pay Apple nearly $1 billion in patent royalty rebate payments. The ruling comes from Judge Gonzalo Curiel of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. As Reuters explains, contract factories that build the iPhone generally paid Qualcomm “billions of dollars per year” to use Qualcomm’s patented technology in the iPhone....

Apple may not be playing ball with the Republican Party’s upcoming convention, but CEO Tim Cook is reportedly set to hold a fundraiser for Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan next week. Politico reports that Apple wants to “strengthen its relationships with key Republicans” like Ryan despite its apparent opposition to Donald Trump, the GOP presidential nominee. A new report out of The Information this evening outlines more details concerning Apple’s efforts when it moves to securing original content rights. The report, which reiterates some of what we already knew concerning Apple’s efforts, focuses on the company’s reserved and “quixotic” attitudes… Spearheading Apple’s original video content efforts at this point are Apple Music executives Jimmy Iovine, Larry Jackson, and Robert Kondrk. This is somewhat notable as it suggests that Apple doesn’t necessarily have a full team working on its video efforts at this point, though it is in the process of developing a reality series called Planet of the Apps that’s focused on the app economy....

As Apple’s former retail chief Ron Johnson sets its sights on re-inventing the shopping experience at the J.C. Penney department stores and the search for his replacement continues, the Cupertino, California-headquartered gadget designer isn’t resting on its laurels. Future plans call for continuation of an aggressive retail expansion that includes 40 new stores during fiscal 2012, thirty of them outside the United States. The original Mortal Kombat arrived in arcades way back in 1992 and quickly became popular for its distinctive characters and brutal combat. While parents were outraged by the gore and violence found in the games, their popularity only grew with each sequel. A PG-13 movie adaptation appeared in 1995 from director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil), and while it watered down the bloodshed somewhat, it did a surprisingly good job capturing the charm of the games....

While there are many people who enjoyed the Skywalker saga’s finale, reactions to the film have been quite mixed. Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs went on “Charlie Rose” last night to discuss a range of topics, including Apple. Jacobs notably told an anecdote (around 3:00) of when he tried to persuade Apple in the 1990s to put a Qualcomm radio in the Newton PDA, but his pitch failed. He also apparently took his Newton to Palm, with it taped to a Palm Pilot brochure, and pitched the idea of integrating Palm’s OS into a Qualcomm smartphone....

In a new interview with Bloomberg today, Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf touched on the company’s evolving relationship with Apple. Following the bitter legal battle between the two companies, Mollenkopf says things feel “much more natural now.” The two were engaged in a bitter legal battle over patent royalties, with Apple accusing Qualcomm of “double dipping” and Apple withholding payments to the chipmaker entirely. Right as the actual trial began, however, Apple and Qualcomm announced a blockbuster settlement at the last minute....
