Reuters is today running a profile on Apple CEO Tim Cook. There’s of course the inevitable angle in there: stock down, no major new products launched, questions asked about whether Cook has what it takes. But what emerges is a picture of a man who knows he isn’t Steve Jobs and isn’t trying to be. Yet who also doesn’t shy away from making big decisions in tough circumstances. Insiders also said that Cook’s quiet demeanour shouldn’t be mistaken for lack of steel....

When the first generation Apple Watch debuted in 2015, people often called it the Dick Tracy watch because you could make phone calls from your wrist like the comic book strip detective known for his 2-way wrist radio. Apple Watch wasn’t fully there yet, however, because it needed a nearby iPhone to actually carry those phone calls. Bloomberg reports that Qualcomm shares have dropped after the company’s CEO hinted that its biggest customer could switch to a rival supplier for future orders. Reading between the lines, the speculation is that its biggest customer is Apple (Samsung is the only other company close to holding that title) and that a switch to Qualcomm’s rival means Apple’s is considering Intel for LTE modem chips in the iPhone 7: The reports come as Intel this week announced it’s laying off around 12,000 employees as it restructures to, according to the company, evolve “from a PC company to a company that powers the cloud and billions of smart, connected computing devices....

The Chinese technology media site Commercial Times is claiming that Quanta will begin initial production runs of Apple Watch 2 in January, later in the month. This would match current expectations that the next-generation Apple Watch 2 will be launched about a year after the first Apple Watch, around April. A 4-inch ‘iPhone 6c’ is also on the cards for a March/April debut. Parts and components leaks for Apple Watch 2 have yet to appear in the wild, although there are also rumors that the second-generation Watch will feature a thinner overall design....

The Aspen-M, available in a private beta, is the culmination of Rigetti’s particular take on large-scale quantum computers. The firm is pursuing multi-chip quantum processors and announced plans earlier this year to offer it to customers through its Quantum Cloud Services platform. The first Rambo movie titled First Blood was released in 1982, starring Sylvester Stallone as a Vietnam War veteran being hunted down by a corrupt sheriff and his deputies. Android 10 is still a long way for a lot of devices and smartphone users are eagerly waiting to get a taste of Android 10 updates on their devices. Google has released Android 11 Developer Preview 1 for the developers but, it is only available for the Pixel users. Apple fans celebrated the grand reopening of Apple Fifth Avenue today in New York City. According to Bloomberg, Apple is again asking for permission to sell used refurbished iPhones in India. The company tried asking for this before but was shot down by government officials in the country. Apple is planning to manufacture new iPhones in India as soon as April but is again negotiating to sell refurbished devices as well, assumedly at lower prices than the brand new models. The request makes up one of the concessions Apple has submitted to the Indian government as incentives to start iPhone local manufacturing....

A new potentially serious software vulnerability has been discovered in iOS 13 that works via the default Mail app on iPhone and iPad. The security group ZecOps (via Motherboard) says that one of the two vulnerabilities is a zero-click exploit (no user interaction needed) that can be performed remotely. ZecOps detailed its findings in a blog post and the most serious vulnerability of the two affects even the latest iOS 13 public release (iOS 12 too)....
