Evan Peters has revealed that he’s open to crossing the streams and playing Wolverine in the MCU. The actor will next be seen in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which could very well mark the conclusion of Fox’s nearly two-decade-spanning X-Men franchise. Peters joined the mutant team back in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, quickly turning Quicksilver into a scene-stealing fan-favorite. He subsequently reprised the role in X-Men: Apocalypse and made a cameo appearance in Deadpool 2. With Disney’s acquisition of Fox now complete and with only Deadpool not scheduled to be rebooted, Dark Phoenix will be the last chance for fans to enjoy Peters as the popular speedster.
Dark Phoenix will also be the first X-Men film to not feature the character of Wolverine. Played iconically by Hugh Jackman, the gruff mutant appeared across nine films before receiving a brutal and poignant swansong in Logan. Though many fans - and even Ryan Reynolds - hold on to hope that Jackman will once again reprise the role, all signs indicate that the Australian actor has already moved on. With Disney no doubt considering numerous different directions to take the beloved characters, numerous names have been bandied about regarding who could take over the sideburns and adamantium claws. Zac Efron, Daniel Radcliffe, and even Keanu Reeves are just some of the suggestions that have come to the fore - or been offered up as potentials in various pieces of fan-art.
Speaking with Screen Rant at WonderCon, Peters opened up about which other mutant character’s he’d like to play, officially tossing his name into the hat. “Wolverine,” he declared. “For sure. He’s f*cking awesome.” He was joined by co-stars Alexandra Shipp and Kodi Smit-McPhee, who played Storm and Nightcrawler, respectively. Whilst they remained unsure, Peters revealed it wasn’t the first time he’d pondered such a question and remained resolute - even in the face of Shipp questioning whether, like her, the answer sometimes changed. “I’ve legit been thinking about this,” Peters continued. “Always Wolverine. A hundred percent. Dude can rejuvenate.”
There will no doubt by many who will immediately write off the prospect of Peters taking on the role of Wolverine. He does, after all, look a lot younger and boyish than more would expect for the gruff and battle-worn Logan. But if his myriad of roles on American Horror Story has taught people anything, it’s that Peters is nothing if not an extremely versatile performer. Over the course of the show’s run, he has played a troubled teen ghost, a mass murdering hotelier, and much more besides. Peters has more than risen to each challenge - exuding a level of charisma that somehow even transcends his characters’ more brutal acts. Such a trait would be useful in bringing Wolverine to life in an accurate yet likable way.
Even Peters’ youth could be a plus, especially if Disney and Marvel Studios want to distinguish themselves from what came before. It would definitely be easier for Peters to develop the physique required for the role than it would be for somebody to develop the requisite charm. Chris Pratt certainly proved the transformative powers of Marvel when he landed the role of Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy. With X-Men and Fantastic Four, the other property previously held by Fox, not due to appear in the MCU for at least a few more years, everything remains pretty moot. Still, until definitive decisions and plans for the characters starts to emerge, speculation will remain rife. As such, purely on a level of acting ability, Kevin Feige could certainly do far worse than bringing Peters into the fold - if not as Quicksilver (given the MCU has already featured and killed off that character) then definitely as Wolverine or somebody else.
