Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink has joined the cast of the forthcoming Fear Street film trilogy based on the teen horror book series of the same name by writer R.L. Stine. The adaptation of Stine’s popular horror series was first announced back in 2015 and comes in the wake of other recent adaptations of Stine’s works including 2015’s Goosebumps and its 2018 sequel Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, both starring Jack Black as the writer himself.

Set in the fictional city of Shadyside, Stine’s Fear Street series focuses on teenage residents who come up against malevolent murderers, paranormal entities and the like. First penned in 1989, the series featured various spin-offs and continued for a decade selling over 80 million copies. Stine revived Fear Street in 2005 with another spin-off series and again in 2014 with six brand new books. Since 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment announced they’d be adapting Fear Street for the big screen, things have been pretty quiet on the progress front. In 2017, it was revealed that Leigh Janiak, the director behind acclaimed indie horror Honeymoon, would be helming the Fear Street movie adaptation and that it would most likely take the form of a trilogy, but not much else in the meantime. However, the latest news on the project suggests things are moving forward pretty quickly now.

Deadline reports that Sadie Sink, who plays Max Mayfield in Netflix’s wildly successful Stranger Things, is the latest to join the cast of the Fear Street trilogy. Sink joins other confirmed Fear Street cast members that include Kiana Madeira (Really Me, Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars) and Olivia Welch (Modern Family, Agent Carter) alongside other recent additions like child rapper Benjamin Flores Jr. and Ashley Zukerman of Masters of Sex and Fear the Walking Dead fame. The Fear Street trilogy cast will follow a script penned by screenwriter Kyle Killen whose other writing credits include The Beaver and the forthcoming Halo TV series.

Alongside Stranger Things, Sink has also had roles in The Glass Castle and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and will star in forthcoming horror movie Eli when it’s released later this year. It’s as yet unknown who Sink will play in Fear Street or how many films she’ll feature in, but with shooting underway as of last month and a release date scheduled for 2020, we could well be finding out more specific details in the not too distant future.

Some more cynical folk might say that Sink’s casting in Fear Street is a crafty move. After all, it can’t hurt to have a star that’s already associated with the most popular youth-fronted TV horror series in recent memory attached to a project of a similar nature. From a less cynical point of view, Sink is a talented actress as rave reviews for her Stranger Things performance prove. However favorable her casting might be for Fear Street, she’s sure to bring a lot to the table when the films are finally released.
