Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans make fun of Captain America’s costume from The Avengers. It’s been almost seven years since the Joss Whedon directed blockbuster brought together all MCU Phase 1 heroes for an epic mission against Loki. Much has happened to the characters since then, both collectively and separately, but they’re all set to band back together at the end of this month for Avengers: Endgame.
Hailed as the culmination of everything that’s transpired in the MCU, the film is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, with the story written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The movie’s global press tour is in full swing following its big L.A. press conference this week. But considering the burning anticipation for the film, evidenced by the ridiculously high demand for tickets that clogged several online retailing sites, Marvel Studios can probably get away with not executing any traditional marketing. That said, the fact that it could be the final mission for Downey’s Tony Stark/Iron Man and Evans’ Steve Rogers/Captain America as well as their Phase 1 cohorts means the multi-city press activities are providing fans some great engagements among actors, including this latest one.
It all started with Downey posting a short clip of Evans on the set of The Avengers having difficulties putting his parachute on as they go off to follow Loki after he’s been snatched by Thor. Captioning his tweet “This is what happens when they aren’t designed by Stark” and tagging Evans, it was funny in itself, but his co-star’s reply elevated the hilarity. Quoting Downey’s original upload, Evans retorted by tweeting: “I’m assuming you mean the parachute. However you DID design that costume, so I think they cancel each other out.” The two playfully ribbing each other online isn’t a new thing, but fans nevertheless dig it, especially considering their supposedly numbered days in the MCU. Check out their back-and-forth exchange below:
While Downey and Evans have really good rapport outside of their superhero personas, things are a bit different with their characters. Stark and Rogers have repeatedly argued during their stint as Avengers members, but they’ve always resolved it at the end of the day for the greater good. That wasn’t the case, however, when the events of Captain America: Civil War happened. Between their discord about the Sokovia Accords and Bucky’s involvement with the death of Howard and Maria Stark, the movie ended with the the pair going separate ways. This made it easier for Thanos to attack, seeing the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes fractured, and eventually win in Avengers: Infinity War. But with another chance at defeating the Mad Titan in Endgame, Stark and Rogers need to come together to put up a united front against the intergalactic villain.
Them patching things up has already been teased in the film’s special look, but with the Russo’s admitting to footage manipulation, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that their actual reunion is saved for the film. Regardless, it’ll be one of the most emotional moments in the Phase 3 capper. As for Cap’s (and the team’s) newest red and white suit for the upcoming film, there’s a good chance that Stark may have something to do with it. But with the concept of time travel factoring into its narrative, fans will see Evans don his old suit circa the Battle of New York, as revealed in prior set photos.
It’s an understatement to say that a pivotal part of the reason why the MCU has become this successful is because of its actors, particularly its pioneering ones. Despite a couple of re-castings, the core six remained intact throughout the years since The Avengers until Endgame. As fans grew invested in their characters, they’ve also become more interested in the actors themselves, and it’s easier to get behind them considering that they genuinely seem to get along and enjoy what they’re doing.
