Red Dead Redemption 2 received rave reviews from critics and players upon release, and it turns out that the game is a major force when it comes to sales as well. Publisher Take-Two Interactive has confirmed that Rockstar’s open world cowboy title has shipped over 24 million units since it was released in October 2018.
In a year full of fantastic video games, Red Dead Redemption 2 was up there with the best that 2018 had to offer. Rockstar’s title knocked it out of the park when it came to storytelling, with a stunning tale of an outlaw gang on the edge. Although the game wasn’t perfect, with Rockstar kicking off a discussion over excessive work hours and drawing criticism over its multiplayer economy, it nonetheless resonated well with those who purchased it.
Unsurprisingly, Red Dead Redemption 2 was also a very lucrative game for Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive. As reported by Twinfinite, Take-Two has now announced its financial results for the fiscal year that ended on March 31, and it was a strong year for the publisher with net revenue hitting the giddy highs of $539 million. Red Dead Redemption 2’s sales were highlighted by the publisher, with over 24 million units shipped worldwide.
Red Dead Redemption 2 wasn’t the only game that made up this bumper year for Take-Two, though. Rockstar stablemate Grand Theft Auto 5 is still a force to be reckoned with when it comes to sales, continuing to grow its position as the most profitable entertainment product of all time by reaching the milestone of 110 million units shipped. Take-Two also called out the likes of NBA 2K19 and Civilization 6 for performing well.
Take-Two Interactive also appears positive for the fiscal year ahead. Red Dead Online, which is due to come out of its beta soon, is expected to be a source of funds for the publisher, and as much is planned for the ever-present Grand Theft Auto Online as well. Meanwhile, Borderlands 3 is set to be one of the biggest games of the year, even if the title is already mired in controversy.
Undoubtedly the plan is for Red Dead Online to be as big a presence in multiplayer as Grand Theft Auto Online has been. That said, Rockstar has a mission on its hands if it wants to capture that lightning in a bottle that’s kept Grand Theft Auto at the top of Twitch charts so many years after release. Either way, it will certainly be more than enough to keep the studio busy - and its publisher happy - until Grand Theft Auto 6 starts to take form.
