Marketing for Godzilla: King of the Monsters continues, this time showcasing security footage of Rodan. The giant monster blockbuster is arriving later this month. The final trailer recently premiered, showing plenty of new action-packed footage.
Rodan is one of the Titans in King of the Monsters. The character has been around for over 60 years, first appearing in TOHO’s 1956 film, Rodan. The Pteranodon would appear alongside Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah in the 1964 film, Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. From there, Rodan would appear in a number of Godzilla films. Rodan is one of the most well known giant monsters of all time, so fans were very excited when he was announced to appear in King of the Monsters. From the footage released, we’ve seen him collide with Ghidorah in the air. If a toy set is accurate, we can expect Rodan to throw down with Godzilla as well at some point during the movie.
The MonarchSciences Twitter (via CBR) has posted another security video, this time showing the raw power of Rodan. As seen in the tweet, Rodan cannot be contained.
The footage itself doesn’t really contain anything new. The scene with Rodan on top of the volcano is lifted from the first trailer. Also, the scene with him flying is taken from the sequence where he collides with Ghidorah. The close-up is taken from the third trailer. However, we can clearly hear Rodan’s full screech thanks to the video. (The previous Monarch video featuring Rodan did not have the full roar.) The roar is overall different than the classic screech from the TOHO films, sounding a lot more bird-like.
Despite Rodan being featured in all the trailers and many of the TV spots, his role is something of a mystery in comparison to the other monsters. Godzilla and Mothra both appear to be on the side of good, with Ghidorah being the antagonist. Rodan, based on all the footage, appears to be a wildcard. In Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, Rodan didn’t care about the Earth until Mothra convinced him and Godzilla to work together against the villain. Perhaps something similar will happen in King of the Monsters.
Whatever happens, it appears the team at Legendary have managed to adapt Rodan with respect to how he appeared in the Japanese movies. The close-up shot seen in the third trailer and security footage is very reminiscent of his original look in 1956. It remains to be seen if Rodan will end up working alongside Godzilla, like they did all those years ago in the Japanese film. We’ll know for sure soon, because Godzilla: King of the Monsters is almost upon us.
