Warcraft director Duncan Jones reveals that his Rogue Trooper script blends Guardians of the Galaxy and The Raid. Originally appearing in the British anthology comic book 2000 AD, Rogue Trooper is a genetically engineered super-soldier with blue skin who possesses superhuman abilities that allow him to survive almost anything, even being shot into the vacuum of space without a suit. Later iterations of Rogue Trooper appeared in crossover comics with other 2000AD characters, including Judge Dredd.

After initially teasing fans with news that he was working on a “comic book movie,” Jones in 2018 revealed that he was in fact tackling the task of bringing Rogue Trooper to the big screen. Jones of course previously adapted the mega-selling video game World of Warcraft into the big-budget film Warcraft, which despite its strong overseas performance, is still waiting to get a sequel. Last year, Jones brought his dystopian sci-fi film Mute to Netflix, but the project received mixed reviews.

Jones is now hard at work on his next project, the big screen Rogue Trooper. In a tweet, the filmmaker brought his fans up-to-date on his work on the Rogue Trooper script, and in doing so offered up a little tease about the movie’s tone. See Duncan Jones’ tweet below:

Guardians of the Galaxy of course was also originally a comic book, known for its decidedly humorous and subversive tone, before James Gunn brought the characters to the MCU with the 2014 movie. Much less comical in tone is The Raid: Redemption, the 2011 movie from director Gareth Evans that featured a SWAT team fighting its way through a tenement building packed with an army of killers. Evans’ film went on to become an action movie cult classic thanks in large part to its stunning fight scenes featuring the Indonesian martial art Pencak Silat, choreographed by stars Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian.

Reading into Duncan Jones’ characterization of his Rogue Trooper script, it seems the film will likely combine the quirky humor of Guardians of the Galaxy with the action-heavy story approach of The Raid. That sounds about right for a super-soldier character who lives in the same universe as Judge Dredd, a character who has himself been featured in a pair of movies, the second one heavily influenced by the very same Raid action that apparently will inform Jones’ take on Rogue Trooper. No doubt, Jones will offer more updates on where he’s going with Rogue Trooper in the coming weeks and months.
