Roseanne season 10 episode 3 featured three generations of the Conners family clashing over parenting styles. The first series of Roseanne was regarded as groundbreaking due to its depiction of a struggling, working-class family. The title character was played by comedian Roseanne Barr and the show provided John Goodman (Kong: Skull Island) with a breakthrough role as her husband Dan. The original show ended after nine seasons in 1997. Roseanne’s season 9 finale “Into That Good Night” was considered a disappointment when it first aired, however.
The ending revealed the family hadn’t really won the lottery and the bulk of that season was just part of a book Roseanne herself was writing. It turns out Dan had died of a heart attack and Darlene ended up with Mark instead of David. This finale was essentially ignored when Roseanne returned for season 10, which found Dan alive and well and the family had a new bunch of grandkids. Roseanne Barr was later fired by ABC following controversial remarks made on social media, which led to the creation of spinoff The Conners, which focused on the family picking up the pieces in the aftermath of Roseanne’s sudden passing.
Roseanne season 10 received mostly good reviews and strong ratings, with praise focused on the cast. The show even - sort of- solved the famous Becky problem, with the character having been played by both Lecy Goranson and Sarah Chalke (Scrubs) throughout the original series; in season 10, Chalke has a guest role playing a woman who wants Goranson’s Becky to act as a surrogate mother. Roseanne season 10 episode 3 “Roseanne Gets the Chair” has the title character confronting aging, as a bad knee means she has to have a stairlift installed - Dan has great fun teasing her over this.
The major storyline of Roseanne season 10 episode 3 has Roseanne clash with Darlene (Sara Gilbert) over how she parents daughter Harris. Roseanne and Harris spar throughout the episode, with the latter constantly being rude to her grandparents, which Darlene allows. The Roseanne/Harris feud comes to a boil when Harris labels the family “hillbillies.” Roseanne - who was never one for gentle parenting - dips Harris’ head in the sink in response.
Naturally, Darlene isn’t happy with this, and she and Roseanne feud over her how she treats her daughter. Darlene later discovers Harris has been selling stolen goods on her Etsy store and forces her to shut it down. Roseanne season 10 episode 3 contrasts how Darlene used to act when she was a teenager in the original series with her she treats her own daughter. Darlene confesses she didn’t want to confront Harris since she feels guilty about losing her job. The best episodes of Roseanne always brought it back to emotion, and it was nice to see Darlene almost come full circle and realize parenting is hard work.
