It was rumored earlier in the year on Twitter that Persona 5 S Switch would be a reality. Now, there’s been another tidbit of information from the origin of that same rumor which suggests that this potential addition to the Persona stable of games is going to be released on Nintendo’s flagship console in Fall 2019.
Persona 5 R for the PlayStation 4 was already hinted at by Atlus in 2018 when they released a teaser website and an accompanying video for the game. While it wasn’t quite clear whether Persona 5 R would be akin to Persona 4 Golden or be a spin-0ff of another variety, fans were clearly clamoring for more. Now we’re hearing from Twitter user Mr. Ohya, who had accurately leaked Persona 5 R before anyone else wised up. Mr. Ohya’s tweets clearly outline the projected release date for what we assume is the codename for the Switch version of Persona 5 R.
The exact tweet from Mr. Ohya and its resulting replies posit that fans of the series will be hearing more about what’s to come before May this year. While it’s always hard to say whether or not a leaker’s finger is accurately on the pulse of any given studio, the fact that at least one reliable leak has been proven in this case is fuel for the fire. Given that Persona 5 was first released in 2016, the fact that there hasn’t been a lot churned out by Atlus on the game front aside from Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight and Persona Q 2: New Cinema Labyrinth means that the interest in Persona 5 S Switch is higher than one might think.
There’s still a lot of speculation around the type of game that Persona 5 S and its PlayStation counterpart could be. Persona 5 S as a title for the rumored Nintendo release hasn’t quite been confirmed yet either, unlike the material that’s already available for Persona 5 R. However, there’s been movement on the multimedia front with the Persona 5 anime due for release this month; given that March 2019 is also when fans were meant to receive another Persona 5 R announcement, it seems like the stars are aligned for a tie-in, at the very least.
Unfortunately, the fact that there hasn’t been any movement on a Nintendo announcement at all does not bode that well for the existence of Persona 5 S. The company pulled out all the stops at The Game Awards for the announcement of Joker, so one would stand to reason that Persona 5 coming to the Switch in any capacity would also warrant a reveal of at least equal fanfare. That being said, it does seem like the right time for both Atlus and Nintendo to capitalize on the growing popularity of the Switch as a console. With renewed interest in the Persona properties thanks to the Smash crossover and the release of the most recent spin-off, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if the leak turned out to be true.
